Working in the garden this morning while the farmer was spreading manure over the adjoining field: good for my microbiome or great?
What do I love most about northern flickers? Is it the saucy way they have of flashing a fiery look over their shoulder?
Or is it their fabulous spotty vests worn over a tight-fitting black t-shirt?
Maybe it’s the way they sit down to eat.
Or the way they quickly stand to show off when a smaller colleague appears.
It’s impossible to say.
I think this look translates to ‘get your own suet, creep’.

I spend a little too much time at the window on days like today, soaking in winter, trying to store it up to get me through all the endless sweaty months ahead.
On headachy July days when it seems like I’ll never feel okay again, I like to look back at these photos and try to tap in to the memory of believing anything is possible.
Sometimes a walk out to the river and back really hits the spot.
